The variability of brightest cluster galaxies at high radio frequencies

چکیده

ABSTRACT Variability of a galaxy’s core radio source can be significant consequence active galactic nucleus accretion. However, this variability has not been well studied, particularly at high frequencies. As such, we report on campaign monitoring the frequency 20 nearby, cool-core brightest cluster galaxies. From our representative sample, show that most vary significantly time-scales approximately 1 yr and longer. Our highest cadence observations are 15 GHz from Owens Valley Radio Observatory. They have median time interval 7 d mostly span between 8 13 yr. We apply range detection techniques to sources’ light curves analyse changes week decade long time-scales. XMM cluster survey: the build up of stellar mass in brightest cluster galaxies at high redshift

We present deep Jand Ks-band photometry of 20 high redshift galaxy clusters between z = 0.8 and 1.5, 19 of which are observed with the MOIRCS instrument on the Subaru telescope. By using near-infrared light as a proxy for stellar mass we find the surprising result that the average stellar mass of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) has remained constant at ∼9 × 10 M⊙ since z ∼ 1.5. We investigate...

The Origin of the Brightest Cluster Galaxies

Most clusters and groups of galaxies contain a giant elliptical galaxy in their centres which far outshines and outweighs normal ellipticals. The origin of these brightest cluster galaxies is intimately related to the collapse and formation of the cluster. Using a large cosmological N-body simulation of cluster collapse, we show how hierarchical merging naturally produces a giant, central ellip...

The stellar content of brightest cluster galaxies

We present near-infrared K-band spectroscopy of 21 elliptical or cD Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs), for which we have measured the strength of the 2.293 µm CO stellar absorption feature. We find that the strength of this feature is remarkably uniform among these galaxies, with a smaller scatter in equivalent width than for the normal elliptical population in the field or clusters. The scatte...

The Globular Cluster Luminosity Functions of Brightest Cluster Galaxies

A new technique for studying globular cluster populations around relatively distant galaxies is developed and applied to a sample of 23 galaxies in 19 Abell clusters. The technique is based on the surface brightness fluctuations method of determining galaxy distances. The galaxies in this sample range in redshift from 5000 to 10,000 km s1, and were selected from the Lauer & Postman (1994) surve...

Cluster Selection and the Evolution of Brightest Cluster Galaxies.

The K-band Hubble diagram of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) is presented for a large, X-ray-selected cluster sample extending out to z=0.8. The controversy over the degree of BCG evolution is shown to be due to sample selection since the BCG luminosity depends on the cluster environment. Selecting only the most X-ray luminous clusters produces a BCG sample that shows, under the assumption of...
